A.k.a. Musicologist, Music Scholar, and Composer/Producer
Justin Maisonneuve is a musicologist, scholar, and composer/producer whose work challenges traditional paradigms in contemporary music studies. As a PhD candidate in Musicology at McGill University, they are currently researching SoundCloud and fem music creators, examining the ambiguous states between identity and gender expression across online popular music spheres.
Their creative output spans from concert music to hip-hop, with an emphasis on refreshing approaches and creative genre-pushing compositions. Maisonneuve's works have been featured in various media projects (ranging from film, video games, and classical music ensembles), while their electronic music productions have been heard in venues across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Building on their BMus in Vocal Performance from The Royal Conservatory's Glenn Gould School and MA in Musicology from the University of Ottawa, Maisonneuve currently serves as a Teaching Assistant and tutorial leader for a critical thinking course while pursuing their goal of becoming a university professor. Their current projects include a paper examining Charli XCX’s brat aesthetic, completing a record, and writing choral music.

A Theoretical and Methodological Approach to Discussing and Analyzing Gender and Personae In Popular Music
Standardized binaries can be found throughout the musicological and musical corpus, often pinning concepts between two oppositional poles: this is especially true in discussions of gender. The systems that are in place do not provide the necessary tools to discuss non-heteronormative gender identities, usually avoiding these subjects completely or enforce conventional binaries unto these queer artists. The objective of this paper is to develop a theoretical and methodological framework that will allow researchers to analyze and approach the topic of gender identity when examining popular musicians and their artistic personae. For this specific study, I will be applying these concepts unto a case study of Dorian Electra’s “My Agenda.” By doing this, I will be able to show the effectiveness of adopting a nonbinary approach when analyzing personae and their gender states.
The following multimodal analysis explores the tracks musical and lyrical construction, its intertextual references, and proposes a theoretical framework which centres artists within space and time. Exploring a variety of topics including hyperpop, meme culture, Alex Jones, alt-right conspiracy theories, and gay frogs, the analysis shines light unto how contemporary popular musicians are using memes in the construction of their personae and its gender expression.

Investigating the music and the ambient diegetic silence found within Céline Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” (2019)
There is a lot to uncover in Céline Sciamma’s film Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), whether it be visually, narratively, or sonically. In the case of Portrait, Sciamma and her team place a lot of attention to sound and music. Although music has understandably been the main sonic focus within audio film analyzes, in this instance it would be unwise to overlook these characteristics in my analysis of Portrait.
In this video, I investigate how Sciamma uses music and ambient noise to influence the narrative, characters, and spaces of her film.
